Roadway Safety: Sharing the Road with Farm Equipment

As spring fieldwork ramps up, more farm equipment begins traveling on public roads. This creates a unique safety challenge, as large, slow-moving machinery shares space with faster passenger vehicles.
One of the biggest risks is that motorists often underestimate how slowly farm equipment travels. A vehicle moving at highway speed can close the distance on a tractor much faster than expected, leading to dangerous passing situations.
For farm operators, visibility is key. Always use a Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblem that is clean and clearly visible. Reflective tape and properly functioning lights and flashers can make a significant difference, especially in low-light conditions.
Plan your routes when possible. Avoid high-traffic times and busy roads if there are safer alternatives. When transporting oversized equipment, consider using an escort vehicle to help warn approaching drivers.
Communication is also important. Use hand signals or lights to indicate turns and be aware of traffic building up behind you. When safe, pull over to allow vehicles to pass.
Motorists also play a role in roadway safety. Public awareness campaigns can help remind drivers to slow down, stay alert, and only pass farm equipment when it is safe to do so.
The takeaway is simple: patience and awareness from everyone on the road can prevent serious accidents during the busy planting season.
