Grain bins are one of the most hazardous environments in agriculture. While they are essential for storing crops, they can quickly become life-threatening if proper safety procedures are not followed.
Grain behaves much like quicksand. When it is flowing, it can pull a person under in seconds. Crusted grain can collapse unexpectedly, and grain walls can avalanche without warning.
Before entering a bin, always shut down and lock out all loading and unloading equipment. This ensures that no one can start the system while someone is inside.
A harness and lifeline should always be used, secured to a strong anchor point. This provides a critical layer of protection if something goes wrong.
Never enter a bin alone. A trained observer should be present at all times, ready to call for help and assist in an emergency.
Air quality is another concern. Test for oxygen levels and the presence of harmful gases before entry.
Grain bin safety requires strict adherence to procedures. Cutting corners or skipping steps can have devastating consequences.
